Job Description

Description of the Company:

CBNA, a Bouygues Construction Company, is looking for a Tunneling Senior Geologist to join the Potomac River Tunnel Project in Washington, DC.

At CBNA, we have been delivering large-scale projects such as the groundbreaking Port of Miami Tunnel and Pawtucket Tunnel CSO in Rhode Island. Our expertise extends throughout underground works, river and maritime works, linear projects, signature bridges and industrial civil engineering.

The Potomac River Tunnel project is a landmark initiative under the Clean Rivers Project. The project aims to construct a nearly 5.5 miles tunnel beneath the Potomac River with 2 different TBM, serving as a critical infrastructure element to control combined sewer overflows. This will significantly enhance the water quality of the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers and Rock Creek while bolstering the sewer system’s capacity.

Job Summary:

The Tunneling Senior Geologist is directly responsible to undertake technical and scientific analysis of rock, soil, groundwater and other conditions to determine the potential impacts to tunnel construction.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Analyze soil and rock samples at different depths across sites obtained from borehole samples to determine strength, compressibility and other geological factors that affect the behavior of soil and rock when excavated (mined) through.
  • Assist mining operations by mapping and guiding underground production headings
  • Study architectural and engineering drawings and specifications to estimate total costs, and prepare detailed cost plans and estimates as tools to assist in budgetary control
  • Monitor changes to designs, assessing effects on cost, and measuring, valuing and negotiating variations to designs
  • Interpret test results to prepare designs, technical reports, specifications, geological mapping and other necessary deliverables
  • Perform ongoing geotechnical analysis to assess construction site condition and perform field and environmental investigations
  • Provide geotechnical recommendations for the mining and construction activities on an ongoing base and the Project life cycle
  • Actively participate in and drive a culture of collaboration, discipline, innovation, adaptability to change and care

Skills & Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Geology or a master’s degree or higher in Geotechnical Engineering.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience in geology or geotechnical engineering.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in identifying soils, evaluating rock formations, and characterizing ground conditions and behavior.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in field boring inspection and associated activities, including logging borings and identifying samples for geotechnical instrumentation installation.
  • Registered Geologist (or equivalent professional certification).
  • Proficient knowledge of project management structures, plans, specifications, and standards, with an understanding of their implications for project accountabilities.
  • Familiarity with design and architectural systems.
  • Strong skills in company-wide or business-level design planning, development, and management system review.
  • Ability to adapt to new equipment and updated safety regulations
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Detail-oriented with a focus on precision and accuracy.
