Job Description

About Us

Dow Excavating is a small, family-owned landscape materials company that’s been serving the Cheney–Spokane area for over 30 years. We pride ourselves on integrity, accountability, and teamwork. If you’re looking for a stable role where your work matters and you’re part of a team that looks out for each other, we’d love to meet you.

Our Work Culture

We’re looking for someone who thrives in a positive, collaborative environment. Our team values kindness, helpfulness, and energy, and we expect everyone to take pride in their work. This role requires someone who is proactive, engaged, and willing to move around the office or yard as needed. You’ll be an integral part of our team, and your attitude and teamwork are just as important as your skills. We value open communication and are always willing to talk about ways to improve how we do things.

What You’ll Do

  • Open and prepare the office each morning by 7:30 AM
  • Oversee and support the sales associate team (phone, email, customers)
  • Step in to assist with customer service and order loading as needed
  • Manage invoices, statements, and deposits
  • Maintain driver compliance and safety files (drug tests, CDL records, insurance, etc.)
  • Handle permitting, job site correspondence, and office supply orders
  • Assist leadership with administrative tasks and compliance paperwork

Not Just Another Office Job

This isn’t a typical desk job. You’ll have meaningful responsibilities, from managing invoices and coordinating sales to helping customers and operating a skid steer (training provided). If you want variety, teamwork, and a role where your contributions truly matter, this is the job for you. In winter, you’ll assist with snow removal, starting early in the morning and typically finishing by midday, with team breakfast included. This helps you maintain full-time hours when the office is closed due to snow.

This is a safety-sensitive role, requiring pre-employment and ongoing drug testing (including marijuana).

Schedule

  • Standard schedule: 4 x 10-hour shifts (40 hours/week)
  • Busy season (spring–fall): Office open Mon–Sat, 7:30 AM–5:30 PM.
  • Winter season: Reduced hours (Mon–Fri, ~7:30 AM–4:00 PM). Weekly hours may be closer to 36. This is subject to change with weather.

What We’re Looking For

  • Trustworthy and detail-oriented: You’ll be handling financials and compliance files.
  • Organized multitasker: Comfortable juggling multiple responsibilities.
  • Strong Customer Service: Friendly, Professional, Clear Communication
  • Team player: Willing to pitch in across roles, including snow removal.
  • Tech-savvy: Comfortable with office software; QuickBooks experience a plus.
  • Reliable: Consistently on time and ready to open the office at 7:30 AM.
  • Willing to learn equipment: Training provided to safely operate skid steers.

Requirements

  • Prior office administration, bookkeeping, or customer service experience preferred
  • High school diploma or equivalent (some college a plus)
  • Ability to pass pre-employment and ongoing drug testing ( zero tolerance policy, including marijuana )
  • Positive Attitude and Willingness to Learn
  • Strong communication skills, written and verbal

Benefits

  • Competitive pay (DOE)
  • Simple IRA retirement plan (optional)
  • Basic Health Insurance Plan (Eligible after 90 days of employment)
  • Supportive, family-run work environment
  • Stability and long-term growth opportunity
