Job Description

CLIENT SUMMARY

Founded in 1980 and headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama, Birmingham Fastener manufactures and distributes American-made fasteners and components for industries including waterworks, road construction, bridges, aerospace, and industrial manufacturing.

From humble beginnings, the company has grown into a coast-to-coast operation known for its grit, integrity, and commitment to people. Their mission is to become the world’s safest fastener company, reflecting a culture of ownership, continuous improvement, and care for others.

Through leadership development initiatives like the Leader’s Code with Dr. Ken Chapman, Birmingham Fastener continues to unify its nationwide team under a shared language of character and accountability. The company is now seeking a proven EHS Director to strengthen and scale its safety culture across all locations.

POSITION OBJECTIVE

The Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) Director is responsible for advancing EHS performance excellence across the organization by fostering close collaboration with manufacturing, operations, and other key departments. This role plays a critical part in driving overall EHS operational efficiency and effectiveness across the family of companies through strong leadership, strategic insight, and a proven record of continuous improvement in safety, quality, productivity, and growth.

Reporting directly to the President & CEO, this individual will lead the development, implementation, and continual improvement of EHS programs, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and alignment with Birmingham Fastener’s mission, vision, and core values.

POSITION KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee safety and regulatory initiatives, driving safety culture development and translating complex safety concepts into clear, actionable, and measurable practices.
  • Design, implement, and manage comprehensive company-wide EHS training programs, risk assessments, and behavior-based safety initiatives.
  • Identify workplace hazards and regulatory non-compliance; recommend and monitor the implementation of corrective and preventive measures.
  • Apply in-depth knowledge of **OSHA standards—both general and industry-specific—**when developing and revising safety policies, procedures, and guidance materials.
  • Create and maintain scoreboards and metrics that ensure full compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local environmental, health, and safety regulations.
  • Deliver and evaluate engaging training programs that enhance EHS practices and reinforce accountability across all organizational levels.
  • Execute EHS strategies and plans aligned with operational goals to minimize workplace injuries, incidents, and environmental risks.
  • Define and drive the implementation of EHS goals, key performance metrics, and action-oriented objectives for leaders, managers, and frontline personnel.
  • Administer and support all divisions in utilizing the company’s cloud-based EHS Management System and Learning Management System (Vector Solutions).
  • Facilitate a consistent and effective incident investigation process, including root cause analysis, documentation, and the development and implementation of corrective action plans.
  • Represent the company as the primary point of contact with regulatory agencies such as OSHA, EPA, and relevant state and local authorities.
  • Assist facility management teams in obtaining and maintaining regulatory permits, submitting compliance reports, and ensuring fulfillment of permit conditions (e.g., stormwater permits, hazardous waste management, and record-keeping).

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE NEEDED

  • 10+ years of hands-on progressive EHS experience, including 5+ years in a leadership capacity.
  • Background in manufacturing, steel, or fastener production environments strongly preferred.
  • Deep working knowledge of OSHA, EPA, NFPA, ADA, and Worker’s Compensation standards and compliance programs.
  • Proven success implementing and managing Behavior-Based Safety, Hazard Recognition, and Industrial Hygiene programs.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health & Safety, Engineering, or a related field required.
  • Professional Certifications (CSP, ASP, CSHM, CSHO, or equivalent) strongly preferred.
  • Visionary leader who can assess current systems, identify opportunities for improvement, and implement sustainable, company-wide safety strategies.
  • Approachable communicator who builds trust across departments, connects with people at every level, and fosters collaboration and accountability.
  • Emotionally intelligent and thick-skinned—able to navigate a variety of personalities and respond calmly under pressure.
  • Gritty and hands-on, willing to roll up their sleeves and engage directly on the production floor to reinforce safety culture and drive results.
  • Relational and influential, with the ability to coach, motivate, and lead both skilled and unskilled workforces through change.
  • Organized and detail-oriented, capable of balancing multiple priorities in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.
  • Strategic and systems-minded, with the ability to analyze data, streamline processes, and lead long-term safety improvement initiatives.
  • Self-motivated and proactive, taking initiative to identify risks, anticipate needs, and deliver solutions without close supervision.
  • Collaborative team player who models integrity, humility, and professionalism in every interaction.
