The Credit Underwriter plays a crucial role within our organization, utilizing commercial lending experience to make informed and strategic credit decisions. This role is essential to the success of the Credit team, ensuring that our lending practices are both sound and innovative. The Credit Underwriter is expected to bring a solid level of expertise and insight, contributing to the development and implementation of best practices within the department. Additionally, this role involves working closely with Credit team members and other departments within the bank, contributing to a cooperative and supportive environment. Through their dedication and proficiency, the Credit Underwriter helps drive the organization's financial stability and growth.

Job Description:

Evaluate the creditworthiness of businesses and individuals applying for loans. Analyze financial data, assess risk, and make informed decisions to minimize potential losses to support business growth. Must have a strong understanding of risk management principles, financial analysis, and banking regulations. Perform detailed underwriting of new and existing relationships, evaluate financial statements and tax returns, complete global cash flow analysis, and participate in transaction structuring and relationship strategy meetings. Review final credit packages, ensure covenant compliance, and participate in internal and external credit conversations. Requires a high level of ownership, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently within the framework of the role to achieve business goals.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform detailed underwriting of new and existing relationships for loan requests, modifications, renewals, and extensions through the completion of credit memos, credit approval reports and other supporting documents within bank policy, to ensure credit worthiness and determine the merits of loan requests.
  • Evaluate financial statements, tax returns and other financial data in accordance with bank policies, regulatory requirements, and industry guidelines, including financial spreading.
  • Complete and/or review global cash flow analysis and spreads.
  • Identify and report material changes or trends in the financial statements of borrowers or guarantors observed in the preparation of credit approval presentations.
  • Review and incorporate Market and/or Industry reports, when necessary.
  • Perform stress testing of CRE and C&I borrowers.
  • Present facts and makes recommendations concerning client's credit worthiness.
  • Participate in transaction structuring and relationship strategy meetings with management and credit partners to justify and explain information in the analysis when warranted.
  • Review final credit package to ensure accurate calculations and inputs prior to submission to Loan Committee or Approving Officer.
  • Review and document covenant compliance for assigned loans.
  • Complete annual reviews of portfolio assets, as governed by bank policy, with assistance of Portfolio Managers (PMs) and Relationship Managers (RMs).
  • Respond promptly to requests from Loan Admin Specialists, RMs and Credit Administration.
  • Participate in internal credit conversations with PM’s, RM’s and management, and in external meetings with clients and prospects.
  • Demonstrate consistently high level of ownership of personal performance metrics and team initiatives, flexibility in responding to RM/PM/management and client deadlines, extreme level of detail and follow-through, and independence within the framework of the role in assisting in achieving business goals.
  • Attend Loan Committee meetings when scheduled.
  • May be asked to serve as back-up for Loan Committee Administration.
  • Coordinate agenda and collect and share credit packages.
  • Take loan committee minutes and ensure accurate documentation of final approval in nCino.
  • Operate in full compliance with internal policies and procedures as well as applicable regulations and laws, including but not limited to Bank Secrecy Act/Anti-Money Laundering requirements.
  • Participate in various projects pertaining to credit risk, portfolio management and reporting.

Other Key Job Functions:

  • Communicate effectively with Senior Management, Auditors, Vendors, and other bank personnel.
  • Adhere to all bank and department personnel policies and procedures.
  • Perform other reasonably related job responsibilities as assigned by immediate supervisor and other management as required.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience
  • Three (3) years of banking or related industry experience
  • Two (2) years of experience in commercial loan underwriting and credit analysis
  • Ability to work under stress and meet deadlines
  • Knowledge of appropriate banking laws and regulations, and bank policies and procedures
  • General understanding of loan documentation and commercial lending
  • General knowledge of accounting, credit and financial statement analysis
  • Possess excellent analytical skills
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Strong written & verbal communication skills
  • Initiative, dependability and ability to work with minimum supervision
  • Ability to make efficient, quality decisions as needed within stated limits
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Word and Excel
