POSITION:  Assistant Director of Externship Programs

REPORTS TO: Faculty Director of Externship Programs

STATUS:  Part-time with benefits, Exempt, In-Person Work Environment

RANGE: $50,000

Founded in 1901, Brooklyn Law School is a distinguished, independent law school located in Downtown Brooklyn, New York. The Law School is searching for a Assistant Director of Externship Programs to join our team. Reporting to the Faculty Director of Externship Programs, the Assistant Director of Externship Programs would assist externship faculty in administering the Law School’s Externship Programs, through which approximately 400 students each year earn academic credit by working in courts, government agencies, not-for-profit organizations, law firms, and in-house law departments, and by teaching a companion seminar. This position will focus on building relationships with field placement and supervisors, evaluating externship quality and program learning outcomes, counseling students, and overseeing documentation and compliance with accreditation standards. This position works closely with the Clinical Faculty, the Career Development Center, and the Public Service Law Center.

Responsibilities include:

• Identify and champion areas for improvement w/r/t student service and employer engagement. Create tools as needed.
• Assess field placements, identify and cultivate potential new opportunities for students, and maintain regular contact with field supervisors. Closely monitor student evaluations.
• Propose and develop strategies to expand employer engagement, e.g., awards, site visits.
• In collaboration with the Faculty Director, plan and design student-friendly materials (including short videos) to demystify the externship process and provide quick and accessible answers to common student questions.
• Assist in advising students on externship opportunities. Manage applications and registration for Externship Courses each semester (fall, spring, and summer).
• Oversee the CORE for Externships learning management system, including regular updating. Take lead on data analysis.
• Create student-friendly materials (including short videos as needed) designed to demystify the externship process and provide quick and accessible answers to common student questions Externship Programs Canvas course sites, including time-sensitive updates and posting of course materials. 
• Coordinate with other Law School departments, including Public Service Law Center, Office of Career and Professional Development, and Student Financial Aid, looking for areas of overlap and mutual support
• Maintain and increase integration with all clinical programs, looking for areas of overlap and mutual support
• Write periodic reports summarizing Externship Programs activity and support
• other aspects of compliance
• Support research and assessment of the Externship Programs and their outcomes
• Perform special projects as needed.
• Depending on program needs and the candidate’s qualifications, the role may include designing and teaching a corequisite externship seminar.

Required:

• J.D. preferred
• At least 5 years of prior related experience, which may include law practice, career counseling, professional development work, mentorship of law students or junior professionals, and/or externship/internship development and outreach.
• Strong with technology and willing to learn new systems and related skills.
• Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
• Familiarity with the New York-area legal community, government agencies, courts, and public interest organizations, and/or teaching experience is preferred.
